Hidden within tall and thick stone whitewashed walls in the historical centre of Matino, a town in the heart of Salento, rises the courtyard of a splendid riad. Beautifully restored, taking great care to preserve the charm of the original Apulian architecture, the courtyard is paved with tumbled stone slabs from Lecce, which were also used inside the house to create a sort of visual continuity. Only in the bathroom and in the kitchen were the slabs replaced by a thin layer of beige micro-cement, spread by hand with the cleta (a small trowel).
The warm tones of the Lecce stone are continuously mixed with the white lime, spread on all the remaining walls, in order to create a very relaxing atmosphere. The carefully restored wooden windows have been painted blue, just like the sky of a typical southern morning.
All the outdoor spaces have also remained intact. The terraces, once used exclusively for drying vegetables, create comfortable relaxation areas. A small pool was masterfully placed in between the two terraces. It is completely white in order to contrast with the dark ancient floor stones now covered by mosses and lichens that have formed over the decades.
The furniture and lighting, consists of very common and popular objects, made by skilled local workers and aimed at enhancing raw materials.
The Riad in Matino is 100 sqm large and has two bed rooms, one with a double and a single bed and the other with a double bed. The kitchen is fully equipped and a fireplace in the living room cozies you up in winter.
