Casas do Côro

It is always uplifting when once derelict group of traditional houses have been lovingly renovated to become appealing little lodgings. The Casas do Côro is just one such place and those wanting to get away from the big city and stress will enjoy what it has to offer – great food, wine, a typical Portuguese welcome as well as the beauty of a largely undiscovered region that remains unhurried to this day.
The surrounding environment is a sight for sore eyes during the second week of February and beginning of March as the almond trees bloom in their full. The granite walls of the 5 small houses that make up the Casas do Côro may be centuries old but the renovation has been done with an eye to the present - comfort and functionality are the major concern: hence the dossal beds, thick curtains, stylised furniture and modern bathrooms.
One of the highlights of a stay here must be breakfast with its homemade bread and cakes fresh out of the oven, though in truth other mealtimes are also excellent, Carmen, the co-owner is an excellent cook. Marialva, the local village, is currently being classified as one of Portugal’s 10 most historic villages.
